Former national soca monarch Raeon ÔMaddzartÕ Primus, celebration ten years in the Carnival industry, secured the first of what he hopes to be many titles, when he was crowned the new Ragga Soca Monarch on Friday June 26, 2009.
Primus, band leader of the band Madd Symphony, out -performed 14 other hopefuls, including two of his other band mates, to ascend to the throne left vacant by last yearÕs winner Dani O, when she decided not to defend the title.
Performing his catchy hit ÔIs Me FriendÕ, Maddzart did enough to stay ahead of Danielle Veira (singing Ah Want Me Soca), who took the second position and third placed Shernell ÔSkarpyonÕ Williams (Soca Love), as the first official event on the Carnival Development CorporationÕs calendar of activities blasted off at the Victoria Park in fine style.
Maddzart, who won the Soca Monarch title in 2003, is hoping to recapture that crown this year, as well as the highly coveted Road March title.
He lost out in this yearÕs New Song Competition to current Road March King Icon, who with his Ragga song Teaser failed to make FridayÕs top three.
The other artistes in the Raga Soca finals were Troots and Ice, Tabia, Full Clip, Squitty, Zolah,Tamisha Nichols, Radikal, G wise and Oscar, Elegance, Lady D and D Landlord.
The next event of the CDCÕs calendar of activities is the Junior Carnval Competition (Kiddies Carnival) which takes place at the Victoria Park on Saturday June 27th.
