East St. George Soca and Calypso

Javelle ‘Lady Diamond’ Frank will be taking the stage this Friday JUne 17th during the national calypso semi finals with added confidence.
Lady Diamond’s added poise will come from the fact that on Friday June 10th, singing in the sixth position in the East St. George Calypso Competition she dethroned six time winner Gosnel ‘GC’ Cupid.

Singing ‘Teach us about Africa’, Lady Diamond’s powerful voice and smooth delivery knocked GC and his political commentary ‘Ah did fraid to sing calypso’ into second place and according to the songstress, “this is an honor and I really worked hard to do so”.
She added that this was her first time in the East St. George Competition and that the competition helped her with her focus for the national semi-finals. However, Lady Diamond is no stranger to the winner’s row. In October last year, she won a calypso competition in Marriaqua with her song “Another Independence, that’s a higher stage,” while in March this year she placed fourth in an environmental song competition.
“I will like to thank persons for their support an ask them to continue supporting me”, said Lady Diamond who will on Friday at the La Croix Palletization Centre come up against 19 other calypsonians for a place in Dimanche Gras on Sunday July 3rd. .
The East St. George Calypso Competition which was held at the Calliaqua Hard Court saw in third place Winston ‘Tump-I’ Thomas with “Let freedom reign” while fourth place went to Glenroy ‘Sachy’ Samuel with “In these times”. The other participants were Jerome ‘Parry’ Samuel (Political Malady) and Oscar King (My Turn).

Also on Friday night, the East St. George Soca Competition was also held and saw ‘Oscar’ taking the crown for the third time. His song was entitled, ‘Handle yo waistline’.
Commenting after winning, Oscar said, “it’s an exciting feeling, I worked hard and hard work brings success”. He added that he hopes to embark on a promotional campaign to push his music, “it’s about me lifting myself up as an artiste and being versatile”. Oscar also took part in the calypso aspect of the competition but failed to place.
In second place was ‘Tump-I’ with ‘I like that’ while third place went to ‘Fresh’ with ‘Wine up’. In fourth place was ‘Cloud’ with ‘Vincy Carnival’. The other competitor was ‘Grant’ (Breakaway).
