Miss SVG 2011 News Update
The names are out and the nine young ladies who will compete for the coveted Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadine s Carnival Crown made their first public appearance on Saturday May 7th during the launch of Vincy Mas 2011.
The launch which took place at the Solidarity Inc. Car Park on Bay Street attracted a large crowd as persons gathered to get a glimpse of the ladies that will on Saturday May 28th take part in the Miss SVG show at Victoria Park.
This year, the show carries the theme, “A combination of passion and brilliance”. The winner will represent SVG at the Miss Carival Show slated for Friday July 1st”. This year the Miss Carival Show carries the theme, “26 years of exquisite pageantry 1985-2011”.
The contestants are Miss Agricultural Input Warehouse Ladisha Ballantyne, Miss Mustique Company Limited Shemon Baptiste, Miss Lime Shenika Bascombe, Miss Lotto Aviar Charles, Miss Vita Malt Shakeira Cottle, Miss Super 6 Jamie Delpesche, Miss Caribbean Medical Imaging Center Rickesha Douglas, Miss Metrocint General Insurance Kennlyn Fisher and Miss Jergens Sheridan Haynes.
Chairperson of the Beauty Shows Committee Cheryl Rodriguez said on Wednesday May 4th that plans are progressing well for the staging of the show which is expected to attract a large crowd from across St Vincent and the Grenadines. She added that this marks the 60th or Diamond anniversary of the staging of Carnival Queen shows in SVG. The first show was held on February 4th 1951 at the Lyric Theatres.
According to Rodriguez, “that year Miss Audrey Hazell was crowned Carnival Queen”. She added that Audrey Hazell who is now Audrey Gomes is presently residing in Trinidad.
“She remains as young and beautiful as ever. There will be a special treat for patrons at Miss SVG 2011 on May 28th, as Mrs Audrey Hazell Gomes will make a guest appearance at the show. She will celebrate another birthday on May 20th 2011”, said Rodriguez.
The Beauty Shows Chairperson revealed that for the past few months, the nine, “Vincentian beauties have been attending an intensive training programme in preparation for the much anticipated pageant.
“They have been working hard on all appearances and patrons can look forward to enthralling and captivating performances from all contestants”, said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez added, “over the past months, our committee has been observing the contestants and we found them to be ambitious, articulate, brave, benign, confident, charismatic, classy, comely and enthusiastic. There is a strong sense of competition among them without hostility, and each contestant is simply herself, so dignified and charming. Each has a great sense of self-possession, is loving and easy to work with. This is quite refreshing to me”.
The Miss SVG show will have as its featured artiste Calypso Rose of Trinidad and Tobago while persons will have to pay EC$35.00 and EC$45.00 to get on the inside.
Said Rodriguez, “there is much to look forward to in Miss SVG 2011; your support of all the contestants is needed and necessary. Be part of this historic occasion and crown your new queen, the 60th, who will be awarded a University scholarship by our Government and you, the people of SVG”.
