The Biography of Shanel Nanton

Miss Baliceaux Island Co Ltd

I was born on 28th November 1987, in the village of Carrierre in Marriaqua but I now reside in Calder Ridge. While growing up I kept mostly to myself, committing myself to my schoolwork and to helping to raise my younger brothers and sisters. It was not always easy because, as is usual, little fights and disagreements would occur. As a result of my childhood I now only have a few close friends and I always have them in mind and in my heart.

I first attended the Cane End Government School and then the St Clair Dacon Secondary School in Carapan from which I graduated in 2007. At school my favourite subject was Home Management. It was in this subject that I attained credit for being the most outstanding student. I also achieved passes in English, Social Studies and Food and Nutrition. I have developed a keen interest in fashion and fashion design and I am interested in becoming a fashion designer. By furthering my education I will be able to fulfill two of my current goals which are to graduate from university and having a career that can take me anywhere in the world.

My hobbies include singing, dancing, listening to music and interacting with people from all walks of life. I have been told that I am a good singer and I enjoy it immensely. Dancing is my passion that has the added benefit of keeping me fit and affording me the opportunity to listen to and enjoy many types of music. I must admit however that I have a penchant for Country & Western music; my favourite singers being the Dixie Chicks, Luanne Womack and Shania Twain. By working hard at their craft and being disciplined these women have become successful, well respected and world renowned artistes; they inspire me to do the same in my life.

My mother is however the main influence in my life; she has shown me that there is more to life than waiting on others to do your work for you. She always encouraged me to stand up and be counted by putting my best foot forward and reaching for want I wanted in life. I have also been influenced by Mr. Khalil ‘Groove Master’ Cato) who is an outstanding Radio Personality and Ms. Sandrine Bristol who is a singer and dancer with a unique ability to pass on her talent through her work with and training of young people. I cannot forget my past teachers Mr. McQueen and Ms. Jack, who both teach at the St. Clair Dacon Secondary School and who always took the time to help me and other students work on weak subject areas. Sometimes I wonder where we would all be without them.

My past teachers have inspired me so much that I have resolved that while I work towards achieving my goals I must remember to always give back to others. To this end I will always remember that there are young people who also need me to take the time to help them through difficult times or issues in life.
